Sweden Travel Information
A leader's perspective...
When you think of Sweden, all the cliches spring to mind: Abba, tennis stars, blondes, snow, Volvos & Saabs. But, did you know about our great beaches, warm and light summer nights, amazing history and vibrant nightlife? One of the most beautiful capital cities in the world, Stockholm is not the only must-see in Sweden. Half of Sweden, the fourth largest country in Europe, is uninhabited mountains, lakes and forests waiting to be explored. Southern Sweden with its castles, stunning islands off the east coast and open space is also a must see. Wherever you go, youâll find locals eager to practice their English and share a drink or two with you. So, what is stopping you? Come and make Sweden one of your longest lasting memories!

real life experiences...
Medieval Visby
It is amazing to me that hardly anyone outside of Sweden knows about Visby on the stunning island of Gotland. A three hour boat journey from the east coast will take you to the cafes, pubs and amazing ruins of Gotland, which are good enough to rival anything in Europe. Visby still has its 12th century wall intact. White beaches and the best summers in Sweden are just an added bonus. Top tip, Ingmar Bergman the famous director lives on Faro in Northern Gotland and loves a visit.
Beaches in Sweden?
Yep, believe it or not, Öland has some of the finest beaches in Europe. With flat terrain and lots of campsites, it is also a bike riders dream. Most Swedes bring their bikes over to this island off the east coast of Sweden, which is accessible by a 6km bridge. Donât miss the ancient ruins outside Borgholm, the main town, and do not forget your camera! Top tip - Swedish midsummer celebrations are BIG in Borgholm and this is the spot to see the Swedes celebrate in - ahem - style.
It's free - all you need are your legs and camera
Ok, I admit, itâs hardly hidden away, but this is a must-see on your trip to Scandinavia AND it is free! The ancient part of Stockholm know as Gamla Stan (old town) will keep you entertained for at least a day. Get lost in the beautiful old alleyways, marvel at the king and queen's castle and the changing of the guards. Top tip - look out for lunchtime specials called 'Dagens Rätt', a first class three-course lunch for around US$10!
Are all maritime museums boring?
The ancient ship of Wasa was discovered when I was growing up in Sweden. The ship was built in 1628 to help with the ongoing war with Russia and rather embarrassingly, sunk in the harbour. Completely restored, it's now in Stockholm and will amaze you even if you donât care for history. Detailed descriptions of living conditions onboard and the grandeur of the ship will stay with you forever.
What's with the tiny houses everywhere?
What's with these tiny red and white houses everywhere in Sweden? Lots of Swedes buy a little summer house for summer getaways, you will see them all through Scandinavia. In summer, neighbouring families meet up outside for dinner and drinks. Make sure you say hello since Swedes, and all Scandinavians, love to practice their English - especially after a few drinks..
